Is Goodwill becoming greedy?
unless you have been living under a ROCK, you might be familiar with the hot debate about Goodwill new scheme. First, lets talk about Goodwill and their big beautiful purpose. Quoted from Goodwill.org the idea came from a Methodist minister Reverend J. Helms his philosophy was to help others being sustainable without "handouts." Sounds familiar right?
The Organization was funded in 1902, and nearly 125 years later we are still able repurpose the treasures of others.
I remember goodwill being my moms first choice for EVERYTHING. School clothes, church clothes, school dance outfits, Christmas. I vividly remember going for the 50% off tag sales just about every other Sunday leaving with at least 3 big bags full. Fast forward to 2020 it didn't feel the same, but nothing did.
How does Goodwill justify their gouging? Everyone points blame towards resellers and, I think they ran with it. Goodwill has been operating their own auction site for two decades making pure profit. I have seen items go for $45 - $2,000. At least with resellers they are straight forward with their policies, purpose and prices. I just cant justify donated USED items that are quoted by goodwill themselves as "sustainable, affordable, and valuable" being locked up in safes, half the inventory behind the desk or individually priced. Now the only thing on the floor is knock offs, temu items, or the "leftovers" they don't care for. Remember they allow their employees to price check items based on their judgment of worth, value, and use the internet of UNSOLD items to justify their prices if that does not sound like a undercover reseller than, i don't know what does!
I have been to so many Goodwills located in the south, and It is no secret that they are each managed differently. Some still remain close to their mission while others are PURE greed, making colors of the week and tag sales a thing of the past. I have witnessed my local goodwill employees taking the clothes that WAS supposed to be the color of the week OFF THE RACKS THE SAME DAY!
so yes, I do believe Goodwill has some tricks up their sleeves that will unravel more and more. Stores are becoming more empty and its not the lack of donation, just the lack of care putting it on the floor for the unfortunate when they know they can make more gouging ONLINE!!!
